Is This Juror Stupid?

Eric Wuest, a juror in the high-profile federal trial of former state Sen. Vincent Fumo, posted a message about the trial on Internet social networking sites Facebook and Twitter. Is this guy stupid or is he just looking for some notoriety? He stated to his Facebook and Twitter buddies, “Stay tuned for a big announcement Monday.” Monday was the day the jury found Fumo guilty. The jury returned the verdict about an hour after a federal district judge denied a defense motion for a mistrial. The judge concluded that Wuest had not been influenced by any return messages.
I’d bet my house that the internet posts will be part of Fumo’s appeal. This story amazes me simply because jurors are routinely instructed by judges not to discuss with anyone the case they hear in court. They aren’t even allowed to discuss the case among themselves. One would think that jurors, after being instructed not to discuss the trial with anyone, would have enough sense not to do so electronically. I mean what was this guy thinking? Tweeting a high profile case like this could have made grounds for a mistrial. The federal state court system needs to update their instructions to specifically prohibit jurors from divulging information by means of texting, tweeting or otherwise, under penalty of being found in contempt of court.

Perhaps he was looking to be excluded from ever being selected for jury duty again.
