Golf Course Fees Are Outrageous

By Walter David

Golf course fees have risen dramatically over the last 10 years. These fees are way ahead of the cost of living. It’s hard to find a golf course that charges under $50 for green fees.

Many years ago Golf was exclusively for the rich. For the last 5 decades everyone could afford to play golf. Well, what goes around comes around. Guess what, pretty soon only the affluent will be able to afford the game again.

What happened? I believe a lot of golf courses are being built to adapt to the weekend duffer's game with plush fairways and manicured greens. This over indulgent need to provide perfect playing conditions has skyrocketed golf course maintenance budgets. And of course they have to pass that cost onto your golf course green fees.

Another reason is that many golf courses are being built to promote real estate in the area surrounding the golf course. And, with that comes higher green fees.

Golf courses also have some strange rules about golf riding carts, an added fee. Some say they are mandatory, other say only on weekends. I suppose the thinking on mandatory weekend carts is it will help in speeding up play, which I don't agree. Think about it, with or without a golf cart, it will take you about 5 hours to complete the round on a weekend.

There are too many slow players on the weekend. All you’ll do is drink beer after beer waiting endlessly to hit your next shot. The only thing you will get out of this round of golf is a buzz-on and sunburn which you could have done in your backyard at very little cost.

The one I hate the most is the golf course that has the mandatory golf cart rule but you’re only allowed to drive it on the cart path. This makes no sense at all.

Suppose you hit your ball to the left and the golf cart path is on the right. That means you will have to drive the cart on the right cart path to the approximate distance of your golf ball which is on the left. Then you take two to three clubs from your golf bag because you don’t know what kind of lie you have and don’t know the distance to the green. So you walk to your ball, hit the shot and walk all the way back to the golf cart. This type of situation will repeat itself all day long. So I ask you, why do you have this extra golf course fee for a cart when you are walking most of the day anyway?

So unless something miraculous happens the average income earner will have to find another sport or hobby to pass the time.
